Last week, I had the opportunity to present at the Central Florida Nonprofit Expo to a very attentive group of executive and development directors representing a rage organizations. Instead of focusing on the specific tools, I chose to focus on the strategy. It’s important for nonprofits to understand the strategy behind social media before diving into the tools. With that in mind, the presentation included five steps designed to help nonprofits get off on the right foot:
- Setting goals and measurable objectives
- Research and listen
- Develop a network
- Integrate online and offline
- Measure ROI and ROE
While the presentation was geared toward nonprofits, these steps are just as applicable for business as well. Here’s the full presentation. What do you think?
Social Media for Nonprofits

Social media levels the playing field for nonprofits. It doesn’t matter if you’re a huge national organization, or a one-man shop committed to making a difference: Groups don’t need huge budgets or vast technical resources to get in the game.
I’ll be presenting this Tuesday at the Florida Public Relations Association’s Nonprofit Roundtable as well. While the presentation will cover some of these same points, it will include more emphasis on specific tools. Interested in coming? Click here for more details.
