Have you ever seen this bumper sticker? It’s one of my favorites.
Today, in church, our pastor used this graphic image as the basis for the Children’s Sermon — which sparked two thoughts. First, how nice to go to a church that preaches (literally) tolerance and acceptance. The pastor used this to explain to the kids that we don’t all share the same religion — but that we should take every opportunity to learn from people who hold different beliefs. Instead of putting someone down because their religious beliefs are different than ours, we should embrace their differences and try to understand what makes us different. And, perhaps more importantly, how these differences influence each others worldviews.
Second, that got me thinking about politics. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could use political icons to communicate the same message. Why can’t the ichthus (a.k.a. the Christian fish) get along with the Darwin fish? Or, why can’t gun-owners be satisfied when rainbows are present? Why must people fear feminists? More simply, why can’t elephants and donkeys coexist?
