You Ask, Outback’s Social Media Team Answers [Giveaway!]

by Heather Whaling

The midwest is freezing in January, so two weeks of college football bowl games is always a welcome reason to stay inside, create a divot in the couch’s prime viewing location, and chow down on game-time munchies.

This week is a little different though. I’m writing this from a hotel in to Tampa, FL, home of the Outback Bowl. I’ll be spending the rest of this week with Outback Restaurant’s social media team as a social media “correspondent” of sorts — sharing behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the bowl experience. Some of the highlights?

Eating at the original Outback, hitting the bowling ally with the Georgia and Michigan State players, spending the day at the beach with the teams, and attending a gala and the parade. Oh, and not to mention the game, of course!

Win an Outback Gift Certificate

But, it’s not just fun for me! Outback has offered five $45 gift certificates for me to giveaway to my blog readers and/or Twitter followers. Craving a Bloomin’ Onion? Just leave a comment with a question for Outback’s social media team. Want to know how they manage so many locations? Want to know how they got buy-in from management? Whatever your question is, let’s hear it. My five favorite questions will each receive a gift certificate, and I’ll get the answers from Outback for you.

While in Tampa, I’ll be sharing updates on Twitter (@prTini) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/gebencommunication), as well as Instagram and Tout (heatherwhaling on both networks). I want to show you all the fun and festivities, but I’m also looking forward to learning about Outback’s approach to social media. (I already know they’re fans of using “surprise and delight” to bridge the digital divide!). I hope you’ll follow along with my Outback Bowl Experience, and feel free to connect with Outback on Twitter or Facebook.

More updates to come soon …

Any updates on the Outback questions?

DailyBeerReview 5 pts

I have another question/comment-ish thingy. The comment part is that this post is extremely confusing. Have there been "more updates soon..."? Have there been winners? I am receiving emails but have no ideal what the questions were and many of the replies only have "@" Twitter tags.

OK. I spend dozens of hours online each week, so don't rule me out as social media idiot. I am not. Sorry but I find this to be extremely difficult to follow. Who is publishing this? A social media firm representing Outback? Is Outback answering some other questions directly?

It's probably just me though.

Hi DailyBeerReview . It sounds like you're subscribed to the comments, so every time someone posts a comment, you're receiving an email. You can sign into Livefyre (the commenting platform) to disable those emails.

The Outback Bowl was yesterday. I wanted to give people time to experience the bowl game and ask their questions. I'll be picking my 5 favorite questions this week, and getting answers from Outback. I believe the Outback team -- in addition to answering those questions -- will be answering some of the other questions in this thread.

Hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Heather

Social media is bringing us to Tampa on Monday. We won a trip to the bowl through the visitflorida.com sweepstakes. As a result we are also flying with delta, and renting a car through National. This will definitely bring us to the Outback stand at Raymond James to buy some food. Do you ever use social media, combined with sweepstakes, and then get the stories of those who won the prize to post to get more interest in the sweepstakes? We have told about every friend we have that we won from visitflorida.com. It would have been even better to say we got them from outback.com.

GarettPaulBrackett Hope you had a great time at the game. Seems like we saw the best one of the day! :)

Absolutely. We always encourage any of our contest or sweepstakes winners to post photos and reviews of their experience. GarettPaulBrackett

Since Social platforms have many users who can see each others posts, does negative feedback (from a customer on the forum) make a big impact? How is the dealt with to retain current customers?

I have another question does Outback have any plans for frequent diner cards or participate with visa rewards or discover card? We would go and redeem points for a $50 gift card

examiner3826 5 pts

I'm curious how they got involved with college football bowls and if they get a big marketing bump from participating - im from Detroit area and the little Caesar pizza bowl gets little attention. Also have they also considered text to win promotions for coupons like last year they did with the Super Bowl?

prtini 11 pts moderator

examiner3826 I can't answer all the parts of your question -- maybe Outback will chime in -- but, I believe Outback Steakhouse has the longest-running bowl sponsorship. Interesting, right? :) Thanks for leaving a comment!

Why does Outback bring a candle in a glop of whipped cream for birthday celebrations instead of either 1. saying No to request or 2. putting a quarter scoop of ice cream in the bowl? Was such an insult!

GarettPaulBrackett 5 pts

Have you ever considered using websites like livingsocial.com and restauraunt.com to add to your promotions? It appears that big chains always miss the opportunity to gorw by using these discount services, especially in this difficult economy.

E_Hanson 5 pts

Outback does many giveaways on Twitter. Do you find this is an effective way to engage followers and get them excited about the brand?

What is the process for handling feedback about negative experiences at particular locations?

Do you help individual restaurants leverage social media, too?

sunrae17 5 pts

Did you ever imagine how much of an influence social media would have on your marketing when it first came out? What is the most tweets you have recived in one day?

@prTini Question for @Outback: What's the most exotic dish you considered putting on the menu, but then changed ur mind? #OutbackSurprise

FORESTofWISHES 5 pts

@prTini My question is, would Outback consider adding Duck, caviar, or venison to their mouthwatering menu? Even as promotional apps? #outbacksurprise

My questions for the Outback Social Media Team:

- Do you track "check-ins" to reward loyal customers? If yes, how do you manage this?

- Do you empower individual locations to embrace social media?

- How to you manage your team to work efficiently without duplicating efforts?

billyspringer 6 pts

Do you have a strategy in place like @SHAQ (60% of his tweets are humor, 30% inspiration & 10% promotions/selling stuff)? And what input do stores have in terms of your social presence?

MVNUSID 8 pts

I like the question about input from stores...I know the one that I visit most of the time didn't ever see the value of social media until my whole adventure played out in their restaurant. It would be interesting to see what happened if the local restaurants were incorporated somehow from time to time. Maybe even do features on them like "Store of the Week/Month" or something.
