The PR Pro’s Guide to WSJD, Re/Code and Yahoo Tech

One of our favorite — and one of the most influential — tech sites, AllThingsD.com, is no more. Instead, it’s been replaced by two new sites: WSJD and Re/Code. WSJD is the tech news site from, you guessed it, the Wall Street Journal, while AllThingsD’s former executive editors Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg launched Re/Code, an independent tech news, reviews and analysis site as part of their larger media startup Revere Digital LLC.

Here’s what you need to know about both sites, including who’s writing for which outlet, what types of stories they cover and where to find them on the social web.

Re/Code

With investments from NBCUniversal News Group and Windsor Media, Swisher and Mossberg formed their own media company called Revere Digital LLC and launched Re/Code on Jan. 2, 2014. As part of the partnership with NBCUniversal, Re/Code’s content will also be hosted on NBC, CNBC and MSNBC.

Re/Code’s articles will fall into the following categories:

  • Commerce
  • Culture
  • Enterprise
  • Gaming
  • General
  • Media
  • Mobile
  • Product News
  • Science
  • Social

Most importantly, Re/Code has kept the entire AllThingsD staff, hired three new editors and is planning on adding 20 more journalists to its roster. Top staff includes:

The new additions to the team are:

As part of its launch, Re/Code announced it will host a conference on May 27-29, 2014 in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. The conference, named “The Code Conference,” will be similar to the former “D: All Things Digital” conference, featuring top industry influencers and in-depth discussions on the future of technology.  Additional Re/Code conferences include “Re/coding Media CA,” “Re/Coding Media NY” and “Re/Coding Mobile.”  Follow Re/Code on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google+ to keep up on the latest tech news, reviews and analysis.

WSJD

To continue its presence in the technology industry, the Wall Street Journal is updating its coverage and revamping the look of its technology section, now named WSJD.

WSJD will cover stories in these categories:

  • Startups
  • Privacy & Security
  • Mobile
  • Commerce
  • Tech in Asia & Europe
  • Personal tech

WSJD is expanding its staff in order to dive deeper into the tech space, specifically in regards to personal tech. A new personal tech reviewing team was created to provide product news and reviews across multiple platforms. The team consists of:

Additional WSJD staff includes:

To replace the “D: All Things Digital” conference, WSJD will host its own branded conference on Oct. 27-29, 2014 in Laguna Beach, CA. The conference will bring together CEOs, entrepreneurs and industry leaders in the tech space.

UPDATE: During CES 2014, Yahoo announced the launch of Yahoo Tech. Venturing away from the average approach of other tech sites, Yahoo Tech plans to provide tech news and reviews that are accessible to the everyday tech consumer, not just the tech-obsessed. According to David Pogue, a recent major hire, the site will emphasize the human side of tech with no-nonsense news for the mainstream audience.

Yahoo Tech also intends to buck the trend by eliminating display ads, instead utilizing native ads designed to blend into the existing article mosaics.

Yahoo Tech’s articles will fall into the following categories:

  • Columns
  • Reviews
  • Pogue Videos
  • How To
  • Best of CES
  • Kickstarter Reviews
  • Ask Pogue
