Setting Goals for 2011

A couple weeks ago, I spent a few days in Mexico on a family vacation. With virtually no access to Internet or phone, I was truly disconnected for the first time since my honeymoon a couple years ago. This “unplugged” time gave me ample opportunity just to think and get some perspective. As a result, I have a much better feel for the types of clients I want to work with heading into the new year. It’s amazing the high-quality thinking that can occur while staring out at the ocean! (I’ll share more details about the “ideal client” in an upcoming post, but if you’re interested in working together, let’s chat.)

A few weeks ago, I identified three goals that I’d like to see Geben achieve in 2011, as well as a few personal goals for 2011. By taking the time in Mexico to better understand exactly who I want to work with — and consequently how to allocate resources — I’m putting myself in a stronger position to actually achieve these goals.

Have you created goals for 2011? The process doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as it may sound. You could take the Chris Brogan’s “three word” approach, instead of developing traditional goals. Or, you can identify a few things you realistically want to accomplish in the coming year. Maybe you want to set a few short-term goals that will help you build toward a more long-term vision. Whatever your process, take some time to reflect on what you want to accomplish. And then determine how you’re going to get there. But, be proactive. Don’t just leave it to chance.

If you’ve created goals for the new year, feel free to share them in the comments!
