Jesse, thank you for leaving the link to the web site. I've seen you tweeting about #eric -- you've helped raise a lot of awareness just through that. I hope everything works out for their family.

Mom, thanks for sharing your story. It's a good point -- even with people who do have decent insurance are forced to make bad decisions. Money shouldn't be determine the quality of medical treatment.

I personally have never experienced a catastrophic health issue like Eric is. However, I saw the mountains of bills that my Dad had as he fought cancer for ten years - with insurance. There were times where his decision on what course of treatment to choose was based on his insurance coverage. There must be a better way.

I faced over $20,000 in billed services earlier this year - for two ER visits and then two routine outpatient surgeries to remove kidney stones. Fortunately, I have insurance through my employer and only had to pay my copay & deductible (about $1750 total). What if I didn't have insurance? What if I din't have the $1750? I can't imagine someone being in the pain I was in and not being able to afford the surgery. Two trips to the ER were nearly $6000 each. Then $4000 to use an operating room in a surgical clinic for an hour? That was just the room. Then there was the surgeon's fee, lab fees, anesthesia charges, x-ray, etc. Again, there must be a better way.

Thanks for focusing on another key area of this campaign. Of course, helping Eric get a heart transplant is #1 but looking at our broken health care system is also important.

In Nevada, this isn't just a one-time case, they don't have a heart transplant facility at all so everyone needing a heart transplant has to go through this. With all the red tape, expenses, all the medical reports, you either have to have tons of money to take care of things yourself and be highly connected or you don't stand a chance.

That is why I chose to help Veronica on this campaign to save her brother's life even though I've never met her or Eric. This is a bigger issue and I'm glad you're writing about it.

I urge your readers and everyone to go to www.weloveeric.com and support this in any way you can. If you have a conversation on this on Twitter please use the #ERIC tag.
